Design Auction – questioning the wage of designers
At DesignKwartier 2016 in The Hague, design & art initiative I Wait Here presents an unconventional auction with design products of young Dutch design talents. Designers are asked to calculate their material costs, hours and research investment. By setting the bottom bid at the cost price of an item, visitors are challenged to think about what the idea, time and effort of the designer is worth.
Designers were asked to part from a unique object, for instance a piece of research, an object that is very difficult to produce or to costly (either in time or money) for a retail collection. The auction works a two way street, as bidders have a one time opportunity to buy exclusive pieces against a competitive price and at the same time raising awareness on the position of the designer in our western society.
How it works
Bidding starts at Friday 27 May at 11.00 and closes at Sunday 29 May at 16.00. Bids are accepted at the festival location (Piet Heinstraat 83, The Hague), but also at our facebook page, by phone (+31628401180) or by email (firstname.lastname@example.org) during this period.
All start prices are solely based on materials and production hours needed to make a single object. With this auction we aim to raise awareness and understanding for the designers investment in ideas, experiments, materials and tools needed to come to a final design.
I Wait Here Shop at DesignKwartier 2016
Besides A Dutch Auction I Wait Here will offer the latest products of a broad selection of Dutch designers in a temporary store at the same location. A series of brand-new collections are presented, such as the newest ceramics by Lotte de Raadt, the 2016 textiles collection by Wintervacht and two series of vessels and vases by Handmade Industrials. In addition, Rogier Arents & Bin Yu will present the project Heart Bloom, a biofeedback installation that collects heart rate data, visualized with assistance of a pen plotter. Visitors can have their bio rhythms measured and made into a heart bloom.
